On the morning of September 11, 2001 driving into church south on I-43. .I was listening to the radio as reporting of what had just occurred was continuing to come in. I looked over on either side of me to see drivers in cars doing exactly what I and hundreds of other drivers were doing-listening to their radios-to their hearts, listening to what sounded incredulous and it would have been had not the images of what we had just witnessed on our television screens before we walked out of our doors were not still swirling so vividly in our minds. Throughout the day there would be people coming through the doors of Our Saviors, Milwaukee looking for solace, trying to find strength in just being together and in moments such as this we did what people of faith do. We gathered in prayer. Several congregations would come together later in the evening to touch each other, hold each other up, offer prayers for those who had lost their lives, and for the families who were left to grieve. Today, the threat of terrorism is still with us. It is still with the world. I have no doubt that our nation and other nations will do whatever must be done to route the threat of terrorism but our hope remains in our Sovereign God. The Psalmist reminds us even now, We stand fearless at the cliff-edge of doom, courageous in seastorm and earthquake, Before the rush and roar of oceans, the tremors that shift mountains. Jacob-wrestling God fights for us, God of Angel-Armies protects us. Psalm 46 1ff. (The Message).
