On this date in 1948, we lost Aldo Leopold to a heart attack as he helped a neighbor fight a grass fire. He was at the forefront of the conservation movement, always thoughtful, sometimes controversial, about how man and nature could coexist and nurture each other. His essays continue to shape environmental thinking and policy. And many of us have embraced his philosophy as we try to live on this earth with minimal negative impact and preserve its natural resources. A tip of the hat and a toast to Aldo, his family, and his followers as we ponder one of his admonitions from The Land Ethic: Obligations have no meaning without conscience, and the problem we (still) face is the extension of the social conscience from people to land.
