On this date in 1983,with the Kansas City Royals down 4-3,with two out in the ninth inning at Yankee Stadium,George Brett put his team in front with a two run blast off Goose Gossage. However,Yankee manager Billy Martin noticed the large amount of pine tar on Bretts bat and called it to the attention of umpire Tim McClellands crew.McClelland called Brett out,and George bolted from the dugout, and had to be restrained. The Royals protested, and American League President Lee MacPhail upheld their protest, resuming the game from the point of Bretts homer on August 18th.Brett and manager Dick Howser were ejected for their abusive behavior toward the umps.Gaylord Perry was ejected for giving the batboy the bat,so he could hide it in the clubhouse.Putting Perry in charge of any gear with a foreign substance on it,would be like making Jesse James head of bank security. The Royals won 5-4.Brett and Gossage both went to the Hall of Fame.In my mind,George was the greatest American League third baseman of all time.Only Michael Jack Schmidt of the Phillies was better.
