On this date in weather history, August 17, 1955: Five days after Hurricane Connie made landfall, Hurricane Diane also made landfall in North Carolina as a Category 1 storm. After recent flooding from Hurricane Connie the remnants of Hurricane Diane moved across Lynchburg, VA, Washington DC, and Long Island on the 17th into 19th. Diane dumped several inches of rain across the Mid-Atlantic with locally higher amounts of over 10 inches of rain across parts of Virginia and Pennsylvania and as much as 20 inches of rain was reported. These very heavy rains in combination with the already saturated conditions left from Connie resulted in widespread major flooding. Flooding across the area killed about 200 people while causing over $1 billion in damage.
