On this day, 44 years ago, Tammi Terrell, who had ten chart hit duets with Marvin Gaye, died of a brain tumor collapsing on stage, in Marvin’s arms while they were performing “Your Precious Love” at Hampton University. She was only 24. Marvin Gaye reacted to her death by taking a four year hiatus from concert performances and went into self-isolation. Gaye refused to record or perform, going as far as to attempt an unsuccessful athletic career in NFL football with the Detroit Lions. Tammi was buried in Mount Lawn Cemetery in Delaware County, Pennsylvania under her birth name of Thomasina Montgomery.
