July 6, 2013: A runaway train carrying crude oil derailed and exploded in the Canadian town of Lac-Megantic, killing 47 people and destroying more than 30 buildings July 7, 2004: A Young Woman Seated at the Virginals, believed for years to be a fake but recently confirmed as a genuine work by the Dutch master Vermeer, sold at auction for $30m July 8, 1889: John L.
