On this day in 1399, Richard II of England was deposed and his cousin, Henry of Lancaster (aka Henry of Bolingbroke), declared himself King Henry IV. Shakespeare wrote a very good trilogy of plays about this succession (Richard II, Henry IV, and Henry V). And in 1923, Great Britain began to govern the territory of Palestine under a mandate granted by the League of Nations. This ended 400 years of Turkish rule and 1300 years of Arab rule. Finally, in 1982, seven people in the Chicago area died after taking Extra-Strength Tylenol capsules poisoned with cyanide. A suspect for the murders was never found. The incident led to safety seals on most consumer products.
