On this day in 1854, 160 years ago, H.P.N. Gammel was born in Denmark. His name will sound familiar to Texas lawyers who have relied for over a century on his compilation, Gammels Laws of Texas. His story is a remarkable one. He emigrated to America as a young man and, at age 23, walked from Galveston to Austin, built a shelf between two chinaberry trees at Eighth Street and Congress Avenue, bought books for five cents and sold them for ten cents, and read and learned from them in the meantime.
