On this day in 1860, Anna Mary Robertson Moses, aka Grandma Moses, was born. The renowned folk artist began painting in earnest at the age of 78; she is often cited as an example of an individual successfully beginning a career at an advanced age. In 1949 she was guest of the Trumans in Washington where Harry presented her with the Women’s National Press Club Award for outstanding accomplishment in art. The Trumans were fond of her work and received two tiles from Dr. Otto Kallir, the director of the Gallerie St. Etienne in NYC in 1953. The tiles are on display in the kitchen of the Truman home.
