On this day in 1890, Deputy Marshal Charles H. Fusselman was shot and killed while assisting a rancher in trying to recover some stolen horses. Fusselman was also a sergeant in the Texas Rangers and was a Presidio County deputy sheriff. He was in the El Paso sheriffs office when rancher John Barnes came in looking for assistance in recovering some horses stolen from his property. He had followed their trail to an area just outside El Paso. Fusselman volunteered to assist him, and asked El Paso Police Office George Herald to go along. When approaching the area that the trail led to, they were ambushed in a canyon. Gunfire was exchanged, and Fusselman was killed. An investigation pointed to Geronimo Parra as one of the killers. He was arrested in 1899, tried for Fusselmans murder, and convicted. The sentence, death by hanging, was carried out on January 5, 1900. The other three horse thieves involved were never found.
