On this day in.... 2004: Christian vs Chris Jericho in a Ladder Match for the vacant WWE Intercontinental Championship, WWE Unforgiven on September 12th, 2004. Having been away from in-ring action for over a year, Edge made his return straight into a feud with Evolution. A feud which would see Edge and Randy Orton clash, and the Canadian capture the Intercontinental Championship for the 5th time in his career. But that reign would be cut short, thanks to suffering a groin injury. Eric Bischoff would announce on Raw, that due to the injury, and how long Edge was expected to be out of action for, he had no option but to make the title vacant. Christian would instantly jump in, suggesting Bischoff made him Champion. However, Chris Jericho interrupted, and had a better suggestion. Jericho suggested Bischoff booked Y2J vs Christian for the title. The two had previously been tagged together, before a tough split over Trish Stratus, a split that saw Trish slap Jericho at Wrestlemania XX, and walk out with Captain Charisma. Bischoff was happy to book the match, so Jericho suggested a Cage Match. Christian said no, due to being injured the last time he was in a Cage with Jericho, and asked for a No Count Out match. Jericho then asked for a Ladder Match, which Bischoff agreed to. On September 12th, 2004 from the Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon, WWE Unforgiven would see Chris Jericho and Christian face off for the vacant WWE Intercontinental Championship.
