On this day in history... Henry "Chum" Sampson was born on the 12th of July 1908. Rather older than most wartime pilots he was posted to No. 149 Squadron to fly Short Stirling bombers, but ten days after his arrival on the squadron was shot down by a night fighter over France and killed. cambridgeairforce.org.nz/Henry%20Sampson.htm Following pilot training in New Zealand and embarkation leave at home in Cambridge, Lloyd Kelly was farewelled officially at a party and ceremony in the Cambridge Town Hall. He went onto complete his pilot training in Canada and then headed to Europe where he was to fly Spitfires in the defence of Malta. Sadly he was killed there. cambridgeairforce.org.nz/Clarence%20Kelly.htm Ken Ward was also farewelled from Cambridge at the same gathering as Lloyd, before he embarked for England to train in the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm. Very little is known about him and his career so if anyone can add more please contact me cambridgeairforce.org.nz/KC%20Ward.htm
