On this day in music history: October 29, 1984 - Chinese Wall, the third solo album by Philip Bailey is released. Produced by Phil Collins, it is recorded at The Townhouse Studios in London, The Complex in West Los Angeles, CA, and Ocean Way Recording Studios in Hollywood, CA from Early - Mid 1984. Following Continuation (produced by George Duke) and The Wonders Of His Love, his first two solo efforts after Earth, Wind & Fire takes an extended hiatus, Philip Bailey will connect with Genesis drummer Phil Collins to produce his third solo album. The core rhythm section playing on the album will include bassist Nathan East, Genesis second guitarist Daryl Steurmer and Collins himself on drums. Keyboardist Lesette Wilson, percussionist Paulinho da Costa and The Phenix Horns will fill out the band. The albums first single and centerpiece Easy Lover (#2 Pop, #3 R&B, #1 UK), a duet between Bailey and Collins is written in the studio by the pair along with bassist Nathan East. Accompanied by a music video (directed by Jim Yukich) that features the two musicians working and palling around, the clip will quickly become a huge a MTV favorite, winning a VMA Award for Best Overall Performance In A Video in 1985. The album will spin off two other singles including Photogenic Memory (#61 R&B), and Walking On The Chinese Wall (#46 Pop, #56 R&B), and will earn two Grammy nominations for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals in 1986. Chinese Wall will peak at number ten on the Billboard R&B album chart, number twenty two on the Top 200, and is certified Gold in the US by the RIAA.
