#OnThisDay in 1960, the classic novel To Kill a Mockingbird was published for the first time. Written by Monroeville native Nelle Harper Lee, it is considered one of the most important novels written by an Alabama native. The Pulitzer Prize–winning novel spent 88 weeks on bestseller lists and continues to sell almost a million copies a year. This image from our digital collection is of Harper Lee autographing a copy of the book at the Eufaula History and Heritage Festival in 1983. Lee was presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2007 by President George Bush. The Presidential Medal is the highest civilian award given by the President.
