Once again, GFD is in danger of having our effectiveness - TopicsExpress

Once again, GFD is in danger of having our effectiveness compromised. This time, the dispatch study ordered by council is in, and will be officially presented at the Oct. 1 council meeting. We have seen an advance copy of the study, and it is FULL of errors, half-truths, and outright falsehoods. The bottom line is: it calls for the elimination of city jobs (both fire and police dispatchers), and the loss of these dispatchers will NOT serve the residents of Geneva well at all. Those who maintain the County offers a duplicate service and can offer the same level of service we have now are ill-informed to say the least, and simply dont understand the intricacies of whats involved. Local fire dispatchers maintain a database of call history, contact info, hydrant locations, response routes, specific site hazards, building conditions, standing orders, etc...the county center cannot and will not do this. Locally, Genevans are the TOP priority...at the county, we will be stacked, or placed in line based on their priority standards...meaning it could be minutes before our emergency is dispatched. (understand that a fire DOUBLES in size every 30-45 seconds). Current radio configurations are not compatible. The list goes on. Additionally, no one seems to be interested in the fact that there likely will be an INCREASE in county taxes to cover the cost of the added manpower that will be required to cover the call load from Geneva FD/PD at the county, while Geneva will have spend money saved from dispatch for the addition of administrative positions to cover the paperwork, filing, and other jobs the city dispatchers handle now. There is no cost savings here-just a dog and pony show to undercut local emergency services. The average citizen will see NO savings on their tax bill-this fact is not disputed. The bottom line is: when we loose direct control over our dispatch procedures, the quality of our service WILL suffer...and that could cost lives. There will be much more on this in the coming days. In the meantime, please contact your city councilors, and voice your opposition to this move. It directly affects EVERY city resident.
