Once again its good to remember what rain sounds like hitting the roof as you sleep. It was a good rain and well needed. And it sounds like more is on the way, always a good thing in Nebraska in august. I gives a well needed break from outside work and lets me get some inside work done. The other day I had a customer in, he was saying how his electric bill had went down since we installed the new system and updated his duct work. He said so far it looks like $15 -$20 per month. Not a bad return on investment. I am on a technical forum where we help out each other and sometimes homeowners that have a problem they cant quite get a handle on. The other day there was a homeowner that had a new system system put in thinking it would save him money. They didnt do a Manual J load calculation on the house, agreed with the homeowner on the upgrade in size and that his duct needed some work done to it. So he agreed and his bills went up drastically. Now he was looking for help. Everyone agreed that he didnt need a bigger system and he should have had the Manual J done. What I pointed out to him was that many times comfort and efficiency issues are not always equipment related. There is a balance that needs to be created between the equipment, duct, and the structure. Until that balance is created you have problems. The photos show some of the things I have run into over the past few years. They show sharp transitions that create turbulence which restricts air flow, a coil that has part of the furnace outlet blocked off causing heating issues, yet has enough opening underneath to bypass enough air to cause cooling problems. And the last one is a plenum that is blocking an air handler opening. These are just a few of the ways energy and comfort are neglected. So much for the theory Air is smart, it knows where to go. So if you have air that is not smart, call us we can guide it to where it needs to go.
