One day I sat on the couch and watched my daughter hit various items on the TV stand. My initial reaction was to stop this behavior immediately. It seemed pointless and a bit destructive. Instead I sat there for a moment, took a deep breath and go, "Honey.... What are you doing?" She turns and looks at me in subtle amazement and goes, "Only the hard things make noise!!" She was working on a very conscious experiment. Taking that deep breath, was more eye opening for me than I thought. My initial reaction could have stopped my little scientist in her tracks, even discouraging her from experimenting another time. This incident reminded me, that taking that extra moment to understand where my child is coming from can make all the difference for her understanding and learning both now and in the future.
