One more thought on all this Ferguson discussion: I am appalled at how many people are comfortable with hand-waving away a human life, with discarding anyone who makes them feel uncomfortable. And why do they feel uncomfortable? Because of skin color, or accent, or clothing, or religion, or some other irrelevant characteristic. Were all nice people now so we dont say nigger, or towelhead, or beaners, or greasers. Most people dont even know any niggers, towelheads, beaners, or greasers. But we sure see a lot of them on fictional TV shows, and since were nice people we call them thugs, terrorists, illegals, freeloaders instead of those nasty names, and we think were watching real life when the stalwart white cops rope in the dark-skinned baddies week after week. We think its real life when every cop show (ever notice how many cop shows there are?) has multiple shootouts, and those stalwart cops always KNOW who the bad guys are, they just KNOW because they can tell by looking at them, and the bad guys are always real, real bad, theyre pure evil and the planet is better off without them, so its OK to kill them. Because, you know, theyre demons and animals and not like real people. Theyre druggies, rapists, gang kingpins, and theyre irredeemable. Theyre scary threats to society, so we need the armored knees of militarized police forces kneeling on their necks. And so we see these exact same stories over and over: young black man shot and killed, and the young black man is always a thug and a criminal. He smoked pot, he shoplifted, he jaywalked. He was in a neighborhood he had no right to be in. He talked back. He had attitude. Capital crimes, every one eh? It is amazing how many white people are experts on what black people should do, or what Martin Luther King Jr. really meant. What these good experts on black people do not see is people. Or the rampant, deeply-entrenched racism and unfairness of America. No, its all because Those People are so awful, they bring it all on themselves. Which is horseshit. When there is no justice, there is no peace. (cs)
