One of my favourite supplements to take over Christmas (and any other time) is Fish Oil. For the holiday blues, fish oils will increase levels of serotonin (the “happiness” neurotransmitter) and decrease the incidence of depression and anxiety. Fish oils also turn off the lipogenic genes (which store fat), turn on the lipolytic genes (which burn fat) and reduce carbohydrate cravings. In fact, it has been proven that taking just 1-2g of fish oil with a “bad carb” meal can mitigate the negative impact of rapidly elevated insulin levels significantly (ie store less fat). Furthermore, fish oil is also anti inflammatory so that it can help fight the swelling and oedema associated with seasonal over indulgences.
