One of my many fond memories of Del City is when I went to get an ice cream soda at the drug store at Sunnylane and 15th. I was about 6th grade and mom let me go to the store by myself. I went in, sat on a barstool and ordered. Soon after a high school boy with a flat top sat next to me. Evidently the lady working behind the counter was his girlfriend and when she turned around and saw him, she was aghast. What happened to your hair!!? He explained to her he had a tough football coach and made him cut his hair. It was either a flat top or a burr. She was in almost in tears. He explained he wanted to play, and this coach was old school and was telling her all the horror stories. He went on and on for five minutes or so. I looked over and asked where he went to school, to which he replied, Crooked Oak. I said, my dads the head coach. He chuckled in disbelief and asked me his name. I told him Leo Thurman. He was in a state of shock and then started sharing with me how great of a coach he was. :) Life is good.
