One of our favourite quotes: 100% of the calories you eat, is 100% of the calories you eat Whats the application? You shouldnt be worrying about your carb intake, how much saturated fat you consume or whether you eat too much junk because controlling for calories inherently means none of these variables are in excess (unless your calories also are). If you control for calories and THEN manipulate these variables, the resulting change on body comp and health (if any) is negligible. So, why do most people fail to successfully change body composition? 1. They mis-estimate total calorie intake, or dont track it. Not matching this to your goal will prevent progress completely. 2. They misattribute lack of progress to a single factor (gluten, carbs, fat intake) and then seek to change or remove this variable. This results in lower adherence and so a higher average intake of calories - they lose motivation and usually enter a binge/restrict cycle 3. Why arent some non-training individuals shredded and lean if they are already eating sensible calories? They fail to apportion a sensible % of their calorie intake to protein. Take a sedentary person who regulates a lean weight by simply eating to satiety but has a relatively poor body composition (high % of fat or low % of muscle mass for their bodyweight) and the dietary errors will be low/insufficient protein and low/insufficient fibre. In addition to the obvious lack of growth stimulus in the form of progressively overloaded resistance training. Conclusion? - If you monitor calories, youre unlikely to be eating an excess of sugar, saturated fat or any other demonised chemical - Once calories are in line, you need sufficient protein to help influence your body composition in a favourable manner That is it folks, as simple as that. Beware the dogma that the media distributes about sugar, nitrates, saturated fat and gluten - if youre lean and eating a controlled calorie intake - these things are drops in the ocean and dont deserve the concern they often receive. If your calories and body fat are high - youve got much bigger fish to fry than worrying about your sugar intake.
