One of the carbon fiber guys I met with yesterday had a trumpet in his house that he swore had plastic valves. I asked him to show it to me. Sure enough, PLASTIC VALVE BLOCK, but with a metal insert and metal valves. Olds, maybe a 1960s student horn? Im sure the valves were cheap to make, and with the metal inserts I think they probably functioned just fine, although repairs would be a huge challenge, maybe even impossible. I bet they were soundly rejected by band directors, which would explain that after 30 years of playing the trumpet Ive never seen one before. I had nightmares after going to bed. Related? I think so.
