One of the great advantages of unemployment: Ive been spending all afternoon with a javascript random sequence generator generating sequences of 11 numbers, then treating the sequences as if they were (presumably non-random) permutations of the sequence (1,2,3 . . . 11) and applying the random permutation recursively to itself. Eventually the sequence 1,2,3 . . . 11 returns but unlike all other permutations Ive ever used this one takes variable numbers of iterations to return the ordered sequence. Even though the permutation is random (the sequences derive from noise) there are distinct patterns and attractions that emerge, crazy things happen if say the 11th number happens to be 11. Order out of chaos - its probably old news to mathematicians but its exciting to me, it means the thinking about randomness and repetition that come from my painting practice is transferrable to a musical context.
