One of the greatest comments on behalf of an ardently independent - TopicsExpress

One of the greatest comments on behalf of an ardently independent press was written in 1975 by E.B. White, who thereby brought Xerox Corp. to its senses about "sponsoring" an article in Esquire mag. I doubt any one person today could stop a powerful corporation in its tracks as White did. But his complaint remains relevant because of what he said about the dangers of concentrated ownership: "The press in our free country is reliable and useful not because of its good character but because of its great diversity. As long as there are many owners, each pursuing his own brand of truth, we the people have the opportunity to arrive at the truth and to dwell in the light. The multiplicity of ownership is crucial."
