One of the many things about Bad Words is that it totally surprised me. This was a movie that could have ended up terrible but it actually kept me engaged throughout the entire film. It does not hurt that it was acutally funny, too. Jason Bateman does a pretty good job directing and he gives us an in-depth look into the competitive nature of spelling bee contests. What he succeeds in directing is that he actually makes the topic interesting. Bateman also raises a lot of questions about ethics while also making the film funny at the same time. Thanks to Andrew Dodges screenplay, Words is a much deeper film than it looks. Dodge makes it clear of each characters motivations and he adds a lot of funny dialogue to boot. Dodge does not turn this into a dumb comedy but it is a comedy that has something to say. The cinematography by Ken Seng is also nice to look at and it gives the film its signature look. Particular scenes look absolutely great and Sengs cinetmography just only elevates the film. Words would not be what it is without its performance by Jason Bateman. Bateman does good at playing the comedy straight and what I particularly liked about his performance, is that he does not overact. His line deliverly is truly funny. His supporting cast is pretty decent and it includes Kathryn Hahn, Rohan Chand, Philip Baker Hall and Allison Janney. One of the best things about Words, in my opinion, is that it touches on many important themes. Winners, losers(in the literal sense) and the absence of parental figures in our lives, are adressed pretty fairly in words. I also liked how Bateman makes a correlation to our actions sometimes being a direct result of the lack thereof. Above all, Bad Words shows us that everyone has their own reasons and motivations for doing what they do. After all the obstacles you face, the only thing you can do is to keep moving forward.
