One of the more controversial issues around pterosaurs is how they went from standing still to flying. For a long time most scientists believed that they needed some type of cliff to jump off to get them up to speed. Others believed that they took off like birds, jumping off their back legs and then spreading their wings. Research is now showing that the most likely scenario is a launch off all 4 limbs in a sort of vault over their front legs. Something similar to modern day vampire bats.
