One of the more intriguing aspects to me of 12 Years a Slave is the point where the movie ends... Sometimes the survival of a hard time keeps you living, keeps you breathing, but once youve survived its where you fall apart. I would imagine that Mr. Northrops coming home to his family would be akin to the trauma of an Iraqi or Vietnam vet... how did he adjust? Survive? When the situation still existed? When he knew the war was still raging? That he left so many behind? The fact that he tried to use our legal system to seek justice was thwarted... and the fact that he disappeared without a trace before slavery ended. Yes, people... far far far more questions raised than answered. Incidentally, the other night I found this very interesting source of material... various legal petitions regarding slaves. Including those of freedmen in Virginia would would petition the Commonwealth so that they could stay and live close to their loved ones. Their freedom came with strings... they had to leave. library.uncg.edu/slavery/ #history
