One of the things Ive decided I want in my life is more time - TopicsExpress

One of the things Ive decided I want in my life is more time playing hand drums as a kind of meditative practice. Its something I used to enjoy a lot and I want it back. Immediately after deciding this I realized that my drums (djembe and ashiko) are pretty unwieldy for travel and also very loud. Doubmek is the solution that presented itself to me. So... Aly got me a doumbek for Christmas! Yay! I love it. The rythyms and style for it are different from what I am used to, which I knew going in and am excited about. What I forgot was that I need to learn new hand positions, new strikes, all that super-duper beginner stuff because the doumbek isnt like playing an African drum very much at all. Whatever muscle memory I have is working more against me than for me. I had been thinking that I could just mute it and practice in hotels when Im out of town, but its not that simple. If I just wanted to practice rythms on a drum and drum style I was used to, that would be fine, but my hands still have to learn how to make clean sounds correctly and reliably. Muting will remove feedback that I need because a lot of my strikes are bad and I dont want to reinforce that. So... I guess I just need to play early in the evening, keep it short, and try not to strike too hard? Im not sure what the etiquette on playing drums in a hotel is once youve decided to ignore the really obvious dont play drums in a hotel part.
