One thing that Justin says in this chapter is of particular importance in that it refers to the genealogies of Christ that one finds in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. Justin says this: Adam was the father both of Himself and of those who have been first enumerated from whom Mary derives her descent. Justin is alluding to the fact that Luke 3:23–38 gives us Mary’s genealogy. That is why it goes all the way back to Adam, whereas the genealogy of Joseph only goes back to David (Matthew 1:1–16). Justin knew, as should you, that Jesus Christ inherited the promise through Mary’s lineage. He could not have done so through Joseph because, unfortunately, one of Joseph’s ancestors had fallen victim to God’s ultimate curse: He had been “cut off from” Israel with no hope of his descendants ever inheriting the promise directly through him. (They would have to be “grafted in” to Israel and begin a new lineage.) Jeremiah tells us what God said concerning Joseph’s ancestor: (Jeremiah 22:28–30) “The Voice of Elijah® Update,” December 1997, p. 10
