One trait of a good gardener is his willingness to identify and correct mistakes even when the surgery needed will cause a less-than-pretty few days in an otherwise spectacular season. I planted too many morning glories. In one place, I thought theyd be pretty twined around an antique metal wheel. They were. For a while. then they went on a rampage, choking delphinium, false indigo, peony, monarda and clematis. I knew I had to uproot it when the lavender, tansy and salvia were in its voracious sight. I wont miss it. It continues to flourish on the deck railing and on the fence near the garage. The impacted plants will recover and the correction gave me space for the fifteen asclepias tuberosa (butterfly weed) I today got from a generous and venerable member of my local garden club. Driving back from his house with the plants on the passenger seat, I was thinking about art, painting in particular, and how you really have to be fearless when you make a beautiful thing. You have to scrape off what youve applied. (Canvas or face.) You have to break it down and rebuild it. (House or love.) You have to rewrite (unless you are on Facebook where the artistry is based on the unediting.)
