One was spayed, one wasn’t… 3 months ago, Sherrie TNR’d a pretty calico girl. And now, 3 months later, she re-trapped her – along with her UN-spayed sister. That sister had kittens, so when they appeared it was obvious there was another cat at the site – Sherrie trapped the babies, and while working on trapping the mom got the sister too. She sent us this note along with pictures: “The one that was tipped was TNR’d about 3 months ago. So, she was surviving on her own, only having to take care of herself... meanwhile her sister was pregnant...caring for kittens & just trying to survive. When I was trying to rescue the kittens I caught the mom but Re-caught the sister so they had been together the whole time; now I’ll find a better place for them to be because the owner of the property has threatened to harm all of the cats on the property. I just thought it was a good example of 2 cats from the same litter, 1 TNRd 1 not... and how much better the TNRd looked because she only had to take care of herself.” This is an excellent point to make – so many people have no idea how much healthier the cats are simply because they are neutered. It doesn’t just mean they won’t have babies, or that they won’t be bothering humans, or that the fighting that spreads disease will slow or stop – it means their bodies will not be under the constant stress that the non-stop mating hormones cause. It means the nutrition can go to the cat, not to the kittens she is carrying or feeding; it means the boys will take time to eat and not starve themselves, looking for a girl! The cats calm down, and really start to enjoy life. Many times they tame down completely once those mating urges are gone. Thank you for sharing, Sherrie – and for all you do on Whidbey!
