Online property-tax payment system crashes as deadline for deduction looms Talk about an unhappy New Year. Franklin County property owners who hoped to pay their 2014 first-half property tax bills today — the last day to claim the expense on their upcoming income-tax returns — are having problems paying the bills using Franklin County Treasurer Ed Leonard’s online payment system. The system, which is designed to make payments easy with either a credit or debit card or with an automatic deduction from a bank account, crashed today amid a flurry of demand. A customer service representative for the office said the server that processes online payments is down and it’s not known if it will come back online yet today. Owners can still print their bills from the treasurer’s website and either bring them to the treasurer’s office to pay in person, take them to a local Heartland Bank branch location (you don’t have to be a bank customer to pay your property taxes there) or take them to the post office and get them stamped by today’s date, which should prove that the taxes were paid in 2014.
