Only 100 Nurses Re-instated No more than 100 of the 583 dismissed nurses have been reinstated so far by the Public Service Management Commission (PSMD). And the reappointed nurses have forfeited their years of service as their letters indicate that their re-deployment is on first appointment. The nurses, who government had claimed would be unconditionally reinstated, are being subjected to thorough interrogation before being reappointed while most hopefuls have been turned away. Health Minister Joseph Kasonde recently announced that the fired nurses would all be reappointed unconditionally but the letters of appointment indicate that they are being handed first appointment letters with a provision of a three months probation which is discretionary. Over 500 nurses were fired by government last year after going on strike reminding government of their promise for a 200% salary increment.
