Opened as the Pavilion Cinema on 30th April 1910. All the seating was on one floor, there was no balcony. Improvements were made to the building in 1914 and it was re-named the Highgate Empire Cinema. It was taken over by Union Cinemas in 1935 and they in turn were taken over by Associated British Cinemas (ABC) in October 1937. It was closed on 9th February 1957 with Bing Crosby in “High Society” and Russell Napier in “The Lonely House”. It was converted into the Gresham Ballroom which catered mainly for the local Irish community. After 41 years of ballroom use it was closed in 1998 and lay empty until it was demolished in May 2001.
