Opening article for the day: Justice may be blind but it has no empathy and is a working stiff for the highest bidder. At first, we might question why someone would say that. After all, we are taught to respect decisions and place no question upon any verdict that we disagree with. Upon careful evaluation, we realize that our civic duty is to question the status quo when it is clearly unbalanced in one direction or another. Specifically, when the law allows a person to walk away with a sense of justification and freedom for killing an innocent person on a rainy night in Florida. That brings us to our next topic, word of the day...empathy. Racial empathy and activism that speaks to changing a system that allows someone the legal right to shoot and kill for very little reason. We like to think that the system is fair, that should we face a trial in front of our peers, that we will be able to plead our case and that it will be listened to.... We hope that justice will be served. Unfortunately, in some legal cases, we see that justice is winking and giving a high five to the perpetrator. The one that committed a crime because of poorly worded laws, bad jury instructions designed to let people walk, or the fact that the public will excuse the murder of a young teenager... a 17 year old, not yet able to vote, walking in the rain. How do we define the cost of freedom when justice is not blind? The cost is one in which society pays when we find that racial empathy...not sympathy is lacking....that the civil rights movement still marches on. We work together for racial equality, marriage equality, gender equality, and most of all freedom for a better tomorrow. Thanks for letting me rant on here. I am taking my steps...have you?
