Oregon Choral’s Central European Tour, June, 28, 2014, day trip to Vienna, Austria. Part 1 Our guide, Jurji, told us his favorite American jokes. A boy meets Obama and says “My father says you are spying on us.” Obama says, “That’s not your father.” Americans have always wished that the politicians would listen to the people, and now they do. Vienna is oversized as a capital and as a city. It was built for the Austro-Hungarian Empire which included Northern Italy and (at one time or another) all the countries we have visited so far and all that made up Czechoslovakia. Over ¼ of the entire nation lives in Vienna. At the end of WWII when they finished dividing what was left, Hungary got all the farmland, Czech Republic got all the industry, Slovakia got all the forests and Austria got all the bureaucrats. Another fascinating walking tour, the best part being the St. Stephan’s Cathedral. Of course we got a lovely book about the Cathedral, right across the street from it, as was the restaurant where we ate lunch.
