Organ traders sentenced Twelve suspects were sentenced to prison terms of up to nine and a half years on Friday for illegally #trading human #organs in east #Chinas Jiangxi Province. At the heart of the operation was Chen Feng, whose criminal gang started the organ trade operation in May 2011 with his associate Jiang Zhenglin. Xinhua reports that Chen and others found “suppliers” while Jiang, a doctor by profession, performed the procedures. Despite online promises of more than $16,000 per kidney for willing suppliers, the victims emerged from surgery with far less. The profits instead went to Chen and Jiang, who from October 2011 to February 2012, netted over $247,800. Chen was sentenced to over nine years, while Jiang will be sentenced shortly. Many netizens on Sina Weibo called for even stiffer punishments. “So this is the law? Whoever harms others health or traffics organs should be sentenced to death or stay of execution.Such a crime is no different than murder. ” @yitongkangshifu “With such a light penalty and low price, there will always be people willing to take the risk (to commit crimes). The most pathetic are those who are willing to sell their soul and health!” @shoujiyonghu2776759113 Others however, called for understanding. “Guys, could you check the laws before commenting on the judgment? If they really take kidneys without permission, or take kidneys from minors, the crime is intentional injury, and not human organ trading. Those victims volunteered to sell their kidneys, and they have the right to dispose of their body. The law bans organizing the trade, but why should the court sentence them to death? ” @miao_mimiu (Adapted from Xinhua)
