Alexander St., New Orleans, LA (1975-76) Empty Lot (Katrina): 1429 Perrin Dr., Arabi, LA (1976-85) 124 N. Alexander is a shotgun house off of Canal St. where I first came home from the hospital and lived for a year. I still consider NOLA my home town, and my memories of it are very important to me. I love that I came home and spent a year in a shotgun house. I like to think of my energy as somehow connected to that city. If New Orleans is like a black-powder-packed firing chamber, then this home is the barrel out of which I flew headlong into life on planet earth. The Arabi home is special. Its the last place I remember being a little boy with all of the benefits boyhood entailed, entirely free from the self-conscious awkwardness and new social concerns that junior high, puberty, and Tallahassee, FL would inaugurate. Ironically, New Orleans, sin city, is marked forever by memories of an indelible innocence for me. But, like that boyish innocence, the home I grew up in is gone, eventually submerged, succumbing to the rising waters of hurricane Katrina and torn down. That homes conspicuous absence and the empty lot at the center of this image parallels and foreshadows my own eventual loss of boyish innocence, and my memory. each on 18x18 gallery wrap canvas bit.ly/1pAUSPf
