Our 5th graders are sponsoring a Spare Change Drive to raise money for the people in the Philippines. The idea began when Catherine, a 5th grader, read about the disaster in the Phillipines for her current events assignment. She decided she wanted to help the people there and soon got her classmates involved. Here is the essay the 5th graders brainstormed to explain their project to their schoolmates: The fifth grade is sponsoring a spare change drive to raise money for the people of the Philippines. People there are suffering fromthe effects of a huge disaster. Typhoon Haiyan has caused terrible damage. The people of the Philippines do not have enough food to eat or clean water. Their homes have been destroyed. Many families have family members who have died. Survivors who are sick or injured dont have enough good medical care. We want to raise money to help them meet their basic needs. We want to do this because we think it is the right thing to do. In the Beatitudes, Jesus taught us to be merciful to people in need. He calls us to help others. You can help us by donating your spare change. Do you get an allowance? Do your parents give you ice cream money on Fridays? Would you be willing to give up something for others? Maybe you could do chores to earn some money to help, or you could collect and return some bottles and cans. Bring your spare change to school every day until Thanksgiving vacation. Fifth grade will collect the money and donate it to Catholic Relief Services. They are doing very good work in the Philippines, and they spend the money people donate very wisely. Thank you for helping us to help the people of the Philippines. God bless you!
