Our Curator of Collections and Exhibits Anjuli Grantham is currently in St. Petersburg, Russia presenting at the International Conference on Museums. While there, shes been able to spent time at the Kuntskamera, studying Alutiiq objects collected by Lisianskii and Voznesenskii, figures important to the early history of the North Pacific. She said The objects blew me away more than anything else, including the ornate facade of the Winter Palace, or the bridge that spans the river Neva. I will never forget the carved wooden bird, enshrouded in handwoven cloth made of silk thread and deer hair, or the wallet with a tighter weave than an Attu basket. So far, the best Russian treasures I have come across are Alutiiq.
