Our Democracy needs a robust press, anchored by strong daily newspapers. A good newspaper brings accountability, it raises awareness, and it helps shape a shared civic agenda. Im very sorry to see a number of talented journalists leaving the Cincinnati Enquirer, following the announcement of its restructuring. I understand print and digital journalism are still searching for a sustainable business model, and one hasnt come easily. But success comes by investing - in this case, investing in good people who can share good stories that need to be told. A business model that instead says, Were going to squeeze as much out of as few people as possible isnt built to last. Personally, one of the most rewarding experiences Ive had was writing a regular column for the Enquirer for 18 months back in 2000 and 2001. I spent another summer writing for the Enquirer in 2004. My main source of income in college was writing and working for the Trenton Times and the New York Times. I care about these institutions, and I believe theyre important. So heres wishing the best to the Enquirer folks who are moving on, and heres hoping that for all our sake, the story of how we deliver high-quality journalism to a public that needs can find a happy ending.
