Our HighTrails Team of instructors had a very busy three days at this year’s Overland EXPO 2013 held near Flagstaff, Arizona. The EXPO is a unique and world-class event bringing together Overlanders and industry sponsors such as Land Rover, ARB and many other vendors from around the globe. The largest component of the EXPO is the variety of instruction, training and seminars that are available to participants. All of these courses are designed around the single goal of getting people to actually get up and explore whether it is a three day weekend or a year’s long expedition. HighTrails’s instructors taught advanced recovery techniques to over 180 participants on a specially designed off road course featuring the “pit” along other types of terrain obstacles. The courses covered Vehicle Recovery Using Hand Tools, which included the use of the HiLift Jack, PullPal, Dynamic Tow Straps and the old fashion shovel; Winching A to Z included the basics of safe winch operations as well as advanced techniques such as change of direction and 3 to 1 systems; Use of Lockers covered the theory and practical application of lockers including when not to use them; and finally, Terrain Management – How To Read The Trail. This was a new course this year and it turned out to be one of the most popular. It covered the various techniques used to analyze the trail, pick a line and work as a team with your spotter. Throughout all of HighTrails’ courses, teamwork and safety are constant themes and really brought the classes together to work as team. The EXPO is a must for anyone who is truly interested in finding out “what is over that next hill!” The wrap-up letter from the Overland Expo organizers - click here... eepurl/AsPkz
