Our Into the Wild Winter Film Festival continues at 1:30 PM on 1/26 with Never Cry Wolf, a film adaption of environmentalist Farley Mowats 1963 autobiography. Fictionalized in some content, it tells the story of a government researcher, sent to the Canadian Arctic wilderness to research the menace of wolves in the north, only to discover the beneficial aspects of the species. Wolves once roamed from the Arctic tundra to Mexico, but loss of habitat and extermination programs led to their demise throughout most of the United States by the early 1900s. In 1973, the US Fish and Wildlife Service listed the northern Rocky Mountain wolf (Canis lupus) as an endangered species and designated the Greater Yellowstone as one of three recovery areas. From 1995 to 1997, 41 wild wolves from Canada and northwest Montana were released in Yellowstone National Park. The park helps ensure the species long-term viability in the Greater Yellowstone and has provided a place for research on how wolves may affect many aspects of the ecosystem.
