Our bright future social entrepreneurs from our course Leaders for Change continue to learn valuable skills and advice from inspiring guest lecturers who this week shared their experiences and motivations regarding how to start a social enterprise. Participants had the opportunity to learn about the inspiration and work done by Fundación Acción Joven, an organization that develops and implements programs that help students stay engaged and active in school. They also learned how the social enterprise Lafaza imports vanilla from a small village in Madagascar while returning a portion of the income back to the villagers, thus promoting a sustainable economy. Valuable tips and ideas for creating successful marketing presentations, strategies and promotional techniques for an effective business plan were provided by the founder of an international development company and an environment-friendly cosmetics foundation. Students also visited the Costa Rican Etymological Society’s Butterfly Farm, a for-profit social enterprise that connects local breeders of butterflies with a diverse client base around the world and creates a sustainable economy within their local environment by promoting free trade practices.
