Our day started nice and clear, but on schedule, the clouds and scattered thunderstorms developed across the state this afternoon. The storms will be very much hit or miss through the afternoon and evening with most areas staying dry, but a few spots getting a brief hard shower. The main concern from the thunderstorms during the next several hours will be gusty winds to 45 mph and lightning. These storms will not have a lot of energy to produce severe conditions, although a few might become stronger on the far eastern plains near a weak cold front along the Kansas border. The storms will end this evening over most of Colorado, but a few of them may linger on the far eastern plains closer to that cold front. Skies will clear across the area tonight, with lows in the 40s in the mountains and 50s to near 60 on the plains. Some clouds may stick around close to the Nebraska/Kansas border areas. Tuesday should be a bit more active in terms of thunderstorms as a surge of more humid surface air moves into eastern Colorado, while some monsoon moisture arrives at higher levels over the mountains and western sections of the state. Rain chances will be in the 40-50% range with some locally heavy rainfall possible. Wednesday through Friday will be pretty typical for mid to late August, sunny mornings, scattered afternoon storms and seasonally warm temperatures in the 80s on the plains and 70s in the high country. Ran chances for any given spot will drop back to the usual 20% range. We are watching a shift in the weather pattern for this weekend into early next week. A fairly strong push of cooler air from Canada will drop into the northern Rockies this weekend. Colorado will be on the southern edge of this cooler pattern, but we will likely see temperatures 5-10 degrees below average over the weekend. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will accompany this change in the pattern Saturday into early next week. To our north, we would not be too surprised to see some early snow fall in the mountains of Idaho and Montana by early Sunday!
