Our family story The story begins in 1963....Karl and Irma Persson along with their son Richard (Dick) and his wife Gudny (Goody) were vacationing nearby when they happened upon a piece of lakeside property for sale. It was love at first sight with this area nestled deep in the woods of southern RI. Shortly thereafter, Dick , a bit of a gambler by nature, with the support of his loving wife Goody, made the decision to uproot their growing family, leave their home in Brooklyn, NY and they purchased the original 28 acres of property on which the Nordic now resides. The restaurant business was never in their plan. The original use of the property was as a summer vacation resort complete with cabins, saunas, boating and swimming. The restaurant was later born out of a need to feed the vacationing guests. The Scandinavian influence noted in the decor is due to the fact that all of the founding members were born or raised in Norway, Sweden or Denmark. The importance of family and tradition have always been the backbone of the Persson family and close ties to family overseas continues to this day. You will recognize many of the family members in the most recent photo as we continue to be responsible for the day to day operations of this amazing family business. Many styles of dining and entertainment were offered over the years that resulted in what could only be described as borderline success. The rental properties faded away as the restaurant had become the primary focus. Then, in 1980, the once famous Custys restaurant in nearby N Kingstown, RI burned down. Dick and Goody, along with their 3 children, saw this as yet another promising opportunity, endeavored down yet another uncertain path and began offering the lobster buffet style of menu. Never could we have expected what was to come. The Nordic has become a world renowned dining establishment known for high quality foods and exemplary service offered on what is now nearly 90 acres of beautifully manicured lakeside grounds. We are grateful for your business and pledge to continue the tradition of excellence you have come to enjoy. ~ The Persson Family
