Our fantastic summer intern Roberto has written an interesting insight into his experiences in Brighton so far.... When my mother tried to convince me to go to Brighton on work experience, I was quite reluctant, probably due to the fear and insecurity I felt for being in a unknown family and carrying out a real work placement. At least I was going with someone I knew. Things started to change when I began preparing everything, a few days before leaving: bus routes, train routes, maps and places to see. By the day I was going to the airport, my insecurity had vanished. I arrived in Brighton and as I headed to the bus stop with my large suitcase to get the number 2, I was keen to meet Kath, my host mother, and I just felt calm and proud at the same time to be in a different country, a country full of music and culture, and having total control of the situation. Fortunately, Kath was so nice that I literally felt like at home (I was so lucky!). The first days I spent my time visiting Brighton: the Royal Pavilion, the pier and Brighton museum. Brighton soon felt like home.... simply a nice, compact, easy town. Four days after my arrival, I started my work experience at Stages itself. It is true that the first task, using Microsoft Excel was quite tedious and tiring, but eventually a variety of tasks were done, and anyway, that’s office work! Every day, for my one-hour break, I bought a sandwich, some fruit and a Snickers and sat on the grass of Palmeira Square, under the sun (when there was sun!). In the evenings, I went home, I went to music stores or I walked around with my Spanish friends… life seems so easy… Sometimes I joined the English Language Centre trips, such as to see the show “Mamma Mia!”, Canterbury or Leeds castle; and sometimes I just organised my own trips, such as going to Portsmouth or seeing the “Let It Be” Beatles tribute in London. As days passed, I realised that although, at first, three weeks seemed eternity, I lacked enough days to visit everything I would have liked to have seen. Although I have seen the essentials, such as the Pavilion, the art gallery, the Sealife centre, the pier and the South Downs National Park, I would love to spend more time visiting London again, going to towns like Hastings, Southampton or Lewes, visiting the large number of castles in southern England, or going to museums such as the Booth museum or Hove museum!
