Our first line of defense......sleet scrapers. All CTA L cars have them mounted on the A truck, maintenance workers have put them on since early fall. Since our news forecasters are all going berserk, lead by Ch 9 Mr. S. who makes it a daily showing to include Alaska, but all have forgotten 2014 Christmas forecasts. Sleet scrapers are spring loaded with extra weight, lowered with the handy multiple-use useful tool that is mounted in every motor cab. When weather conditions are predictable, switchmen at yards and terminals would do the work. With a fine sense of hearing, an experienced worker can hear the tinkle from sleet scrapers and the rubbing on the third rail when theyre been lowered. If predictions come true, also, look for snow/sleet-fighter cars spraying antifreeze solution on the third rail.
