Outbreak of Parvo Virus in Trenton. Vaccines are the key to preventing parvo from spreading. Two vaccines are need for any pet that hasnt been vaccinated before and a yearly booster for most. Some breeds may need additional boosters to help maintain immunity. Breeds that are highly susceptible to parvo virus are Pit Bulls and Rottweilers, young and old dogs also can contract this virus. Parvo is spread by contaminated bloody stool in the environment. It also can be spread by coming in contact with a pet that is shedding the virus on your shoes, clothing, bedding or anywhere the pet may be sleeping. Un-vaccinated pets on the sidewalks can pick up the virus on their feet. Another place that can spread the virus is at dog parks, designated areas for relieving pets, also on trails where dogs can defecate and the stool isnt picked up. This is a disease that is preventable by vaccination. The cost of treating a pet with parvo virus can run up to a couple of thousand dollars.
