Over $9,000 raised so far to help Northwest High School equip its football team Kyle Neddenriep, kyle.neddenriep@indystar1 day agoFacebook Twitter Google Plus More Charlie Nye/Indy Star First-year Northwest High School Football Coach John Butler adjusts the more The Northwest High School football team lost its season-opener 61-0 to small school state power Evansville Mater Dei on Friday, but that result is far from the most important thing happening around the program. In response to an IndyStar story last week on the programs need for upgraded equipment, a group made up of mostly Northwest alumni has raised $9,330 as of Thursday afternoon. Amanda Perrine, a 2001 Northwest graduate, helped coordinate one of two fundraising accounts. Hers has raised $7,595 in just four days, including one anonymous donation of $3,000. Id say 90 percent of the donations have come from Northwest alumni, said Perrine, who lives in Indianapolis. There are a lot of us out here who want to do what we can to help. INDYSTAR Northwest High School football team faces more adversity than just Evansville Mater Dei Friday Perrine said those interested in donating can do so at the website, Gofundme (search for Northwest HS football team equipment). The account will be open through early next week, at which time she plans to set up a time to meet with the Northwest staff and spend the money on necessary equipment. First-year Northwest coach John Butler spoke to The Star last week about the need for equipment. Indianapolis Public Schools require a 2.0 grade-point average for athletic participation, one of the toughest standards in the state. Butler is hopeful to add several currently ineligible players at the end of the first quarter to his roster of roughly 33 players. Northwest plays at Greenfield-Central on Friday and a number of alumni involved in the fundraising are planning to show support for the program at the Sept. 12 homecoming game against Marshall.
